English:

Long ago two Delaware women went to town.

Lenape:

Lòmwe mah nisha Lënapèxkweyok utènink eyok.

English:

They wanted to go to the store to buy something.

Lenape:

Mèmhalamùntikaonink kahta eyok mai mhalamuk kèku.

English:

Then when they came to the store the storekeeper

Lenape:

Na ènta pahtit në mèmhalamùntikaonink na na mèmhalamùnt

English:

he showed them something, "This is something new I received.

Lenape:

pwënuntëlao kèku, "She yu wëski kèku nëmëshënëm.

English:

Would you like to try them?"

Lenape:

Kwinki hèch a kwëchilahtuneyo?"

English:

Then she said, "Oh yes! We will buy it and try it."

Lenape:

Na tëluwèn , "Nëpèhta! Nëmahëlamën xu nkwëchilahtu."

English:

Then when they got home they began to cook it, they wanted to taste the thing.

Lenape:

Na ènta machihtit na tòlëmi wixanineyo, kòta wëtàntàmëneyo në kèku.

English:

Then when it was finished cooking they used squirrel soup.

Lenape:

Na ènta kishtèk kènu wëlatuwàk xanikwi kshitay.

English:

And then when - - - the squirrel soup and the new thing.

Lenape:

Na kènu ènta - - - në xanikwi kshitay òk në wëski kèku.

English:

Oh, it tasted good. Oh, they liked to eat it.

Lenape:

O, winkàn! O, winkitàmëneyo, kènu

English:

The shopkeeper did not tell them how to eat it.

Lenape:

Ku na mèmhalamùnt tëlawiyo èhëli michin.

English:

Then the Delaware women thought it was like sapan or rice.

Lenape:

Na nèk Lënapexkweyok liteheyok alàshi sapan o pèhpastèk.

English:

That is the reason they used the squirrel soup.

Lenape:

Nal në wënchi në xanikwi kshitay nòkatàmëneyo.

English:

Then the one woman said, "The shopkeeper said this thing was called oatmeal."

Lenape:
